Alex Westlake, CEng, PhD, BSc

Dr. Alex Westlake is Managing Director and one of the founders of ClearWorld Energy. Alex is based permanently in Beijing, where he first worked in 1998. Alex has more than ten year’s experience in renewable energy technology development and the utility sector both in UK and Asia, with firms PowerGen (UK, now E.On) and IT Power (UK). Alex has a PhD in Wind Energy and is a Chartered Member of the Institution of Electrical Engineers.

Alex is considered to be a leading expert in clean energy and the Clean Development Mechanism in China. Alex was integral to the development of China’s first CDM project – the Huitengxile Windfarm Project, which is also the first wind project to be registered globally - and he has developed new CDM methodologies for energy efficiency and coal bed methane utilization.

Alex was a member of the management team which achieved a public listing of Camco International in 2006 and he has served as Director and Chief Operating Officer as well as Managing Director of the China business unit. Alex is now a senior advisor to Camco and also manages ClearWorld Energy’s corporate development. Recently Alex became a founding Director of ClearWorld Now, the operational investment company for ClearWorld Energy.

RECENT ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Founding Member of the China Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs Club
  • Co-Founder and Director of ClearWorld Now, the operational investment company for ClearWorld Energy. Invested in a number of portfolio companies in clean energy and the environment
  • Revised ClearWorld Energy’s social responsibility strategy and invested in the social entrepreneurship site 51Give and supported the founding of Action 2030. Authored the commitment by ClearWorld Energy to the Clinton Global initiative
  • Public listing of Camco International on London’s AIM market – Camco voted “Best Project Developer of the Year” in 2007, 2008, and 2009 by industry peers
  • Authored two new CDM methodologies – AM0024 for waste heat recovery in cement plants and ACM0008 for avoided methane emissions in coal mines
  • Lead the team for the first windfarm project to be registered as a CDM project globally
  • Co-founder of ClearWorld Energy, now a leading clean energy company in China
  • Helped to establish the Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Partnership (www.reeep.org) in China, working to bring policy makers and financiers together to accelerate the uptake of clean energy globally
  • Founded IT Power’s Beijing Representative office and advised Government of China on a range of sustainable energy policies, notably the Renewable Energy Law (which came into force in January 2006) and the CDM regulations
